It was a chilly, dark morning and my Uber came to collect me at 4 am. I was cold and tired but I was also excited. I was going on my first ever solo trip, I was heading to Milan, Italy.
Sure, in the past I had traveled on my own to go and meet my Husband who had gone ahead of me on a trip or had traveled to visit family overseas.
But this was very different, at the age of 50, I had just embarked on a different trip, this was surely going to be an adventure.
This trip was in collaboration with Shades of Travel Network.
I had always wanted to travel to Italy and was looking forward to what the next 3 days had to offer. On the way to the airport, I realised I did not know a word of Italian. When I landed in Milan I managed to book a bus for the 50 minute journey from the airport to the city center.
Milan is known for many things, luxury fashion, food and for some, football is what springs to mind when you think of Milan. Not to mention the magnificent and imposing cathedral, Duomo di Milano, which is the city’s most famous landmark.
On my visit, I enjoyed some downtime, indulged in fine pasta dishes and wine, bought some goodies in Sephora, as we do not have Sephora in the UK and then created a spa morning in my hotel room.
I stayed at the lovely Grand Visconti Palace Hotel which is located approximately 5 stations on the metro from the center of Milan and was convenient for my sightseeing.
Yes, on this trip I had to do things that I had never done before and stretched me out of my comfort zone, for example, getting dressed for dinner to have dinner on my own. I made an effort not to use my phone at the table but to really enjoy every mouthful of my meal with no distraction.
I enjoyed my trip to Milan and will probably go back again in the summer months. And as for solo travel, I would definitely do it again. I believe that you should not deny yourself the experience of visiting somewhere because you have nobody to go with, not in this day and age (of course you need to consider your personal safety when planning a solo trip)
I have put together a short video of some of the snippets from my trip. To view, click the picture below or click here!
If you follow me on Instagram you can see clips from my trip in my story highlights.
Let me know in the comments below if you would consider solo travel or if it is something you have before.
Thank you for watching.
