Self-Love

Hey Loves

Greetings from sunny Portugal!

I am here at the moment with Tony who is attending a kayaking winter training camp.

As we are leaving the month of February it would be great to reflect on how you are expressing love in your life. In February the Valentines Day celebrations are extremely commercialised. Many feel pressured to display gestures of romantic love or affection just because its Valentines and for no other reason.  I love this month because it helps me reflect on how I love, not just love others but how I am loving myself.

Self-love should be an integral part of our lives. However, for the most part its’s not. And this is where most of our problems stem from. I believe that if we loved ourselves first then many of the day- to-day issues and stresses we face would not actually be issues. Self-love is saying yes to the things that serve you and having the ability to say no to the things that do not.

How often do you find yourself saying yes to somebody’s request when you really want to say no? How often do you find yourself saying no even when you really want to say yes?  Try monitoring this for a week.

A great way to start a self-love practice is to write a list of the things that are important to you. The next step is to tick how many of these things you actually make time for in your life. You have to be honest with yourself about the areas of your life where you need to strengthen that self-love muscle and make these things a reality. I am currently doing this list again. It can be the simple things like making time to read your books or magazines. Or it can be deeper issues like, how do the relationships that I have serve me?  Ask yourself, where in my life am I neglecting my needs for the needs of others?

We need to ask ourself this question, because it is common that we are continually doing something that we are aware is not good for us, but continue these actions just because we would rather not rock the boat.

The following are some areas of your life you can start looking at to get you started:

  • Friendships
  • Finances
  • Health
  • Work
  • Family
  • Relationship

As you go through each area, start peeling away the layers and remember to make the list of what is important to you, you maybe surprised what is revealed.

Let me know what comes up for you by commenting below.

Remember, practising self-love is not always easy but it is always worth it.

Until next time.
